Position Description:
POSITION PURPOSE

The Corporate Communications Sr. Specialist position offers a highly motivated individual the opportunity to experience multiple facets of communications within the external communications team responsible for publicizing the company’s business strategy, internal communications and more. This is not an entry-level position. This individual will meet with subject matter experts, provide editorial expertise and coordinate projects to create compelling editorial content. The Sr. Specialist must have exceptional creative storytelling, writing, copy-editing and project management skills to assist with leading content efforts.


MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • 30% Write internal and external communication materials for the CEO and the executive team, including scripts and messaging for broadcasts, voicemails, speaking engagements, quotes, media Q&A and CEO internal communications vehicles. Write executive correspondence (memoranda and letters) and strategic documents such as the annual shareholder letter and quarterly CEO message to shareholders. Develop writing tools and resources for use by other departments and executives throughout the enterprise. Examples include speaking points templates, guidelines for letter writing and editing, and glossaries of phrases specific to Senior Leadership Team members styles.
  • 20% Provide editorial expertise and counsel to the CEO's office and CCEA, especially Executive Communications, Associate Communications (organizational announcements and special projects) and Public Relations (press releases and special projects). Benchmark best practices and develop editorial tools and resources, such as most common grammar questions and most frequent trouble spots for writers at The Home Depot.
  • 10% Perform due diligence, sourcing data and compiling information from subject matter experts to be used by the CEO and Senior Leadership Team for speaking events, panel discussions and interviews to be incorporated in scripts, executive correspondence, speaking points and special writing projects.
  • 10% Coordinate special projects/communication materials, from developing, writing and editing content; and interfacing with vendors and internal team on design and/or translations.
  • 30% Manage various internal communications strategies and vehicles to drive associate engagement and associate awareness of key issues and topics. Develop communications plans, including messaging, vehicle use, timing and refining of audience, for enterprise-wide initiatives and projects, working with SMEs, executive leaders and business partners.

  • No associates report to this role on a permanent basis, but requires the technical leadership of a project work team: may select team members and assess capabilities, provide technical training, provide information necessary to meet work, project or program objectives, evaluate program or project performance.

ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS


Environment:

Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Travel:

Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Education Required:
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience:
5 years

Physical Requirements:

  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic responsibilities include proofing and editing company press materials. The Sr. Specialist will manage Corporate Communications vendors, which will include screening new vendor pitches, researching and assessing new services and evolving technologies, and tracking associated budgets. At times, the Senior Specialist will be required to respond to inquiries by the general public on company policies and positions through social media and email.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Ability to synthesize complex and sensitive materials into compelling and persuasive content that will content that will connect with intended audience
  • Ability to capture the voice of senior executives in order to write communications effectively on their behalf
  • Strong knowledge of Associate Press style and writing guidelines
  • Prolific writer, operating in a fast paced environment under tight deadlines
