Senior Associate Dean, Student Affairs

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Vice Dean (SVD) of the School of Professional Studies, the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs plays a pivotal role as a member of the Executive Committee and Dean’s Leadership Team charged with creating, implementing, and realizing a strategic vision for SPS that is driven by academic excellence, educational and technological innovation, and inspired by Columbia’s mission to internationalize its educational programming in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, working collaboratively with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Senior Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, provides executive leadership for exciting and critical elements of the School that are playing a key role in revolutionizing and redefining higher education internationally.  Consistent with the role of other Senior Associate Deans at SPS, the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs serves as a member of the Executive Committee, the major administrative decision-making body of the school and will serve as Chair of at least one of the official SPS governing committees stipulated in the SPS Bylaws, or be appointed to lead another committee designated by the Dean to be of equivalent importance to a governing committee, in addition to the Career Design Lab Advisory Board. The Senior Associate Dean will be responsible for building coalitions and establishing productive working relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups, both internally and externally. 


Responsibilities

The Senior Associate Dean provides executive leadership to a core set of student-related departments and programs, and creates a remarkable student experience. In addition, s/he serves as a representative of the Dean's office in a variety of settings, including meetings with other university administrators and Town Hall meetings with student groups.  Provides strategic and operational leadership for the following units: Admissions, Advising, the Career Design Lab, Strategic Enrollment Management and Marketing, Student and Residential Life, and Student Support Services. 

Admissions, Enrollment, and Marketing Strategy

  • Provide vision and direction to academic and administrative departments to ensure quality admissions-related services to achieve the enrollment and student success goals of the School;
  • Assess predictive modeling outputs to strategically forecast admissions trends and yield; develop and provide timely and comprehensive analytical reports to the School for planning and assessment.
  • Control and lead a comprehensive strategic enrollment management plan, including goals for a diverse pipeline, competitive academic profile, and creative approaches to student financial assistance.
  • Direct data-informed decisions for allocating staff and financial resources to achieve enrollment goals, and oversees initiatives for the purpose of developing recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Oversee the development, design, implementation and editorial direction of effective print, electronic, website, digital and video communications; includes providing effective management of the production cycles of all communications to assure quality of communication and project completion on time and within established budgets.
  • Assess the effectiveness of marketing efforts and recruitment efforts for maximum return in brand awareness and institutional image; maintain integrity and champion the importance of the School’s brand and recruitment messaging efforts. Balance accessibility for emerging student demographics while refreshing and maintaining the School's graphics and identity standards.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and leadership for the strategic management of the financial assistance programs while advancing the university’s need for revenue growth.

Student Engagement and Support Services

  • Serve as a catalyst with university leaders to assess market demand and trends, as well as improve academic and co-curricular programs to better serve enrolled students, improve position among competitors, and realize net student revenue at a level required for fulfillment of the mission;
  • Execute strategic priorities and initiatives to enhance the student experience;
  • Envision the next era of innovation and excellence for student affairs in alignment with the SPS mission and strategic commitments;
  • Foster a culture of persistence while ensuring that learner needs are supported through quality services;
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of School policies and procedures that relate to Student Services;
  • Ensure that all areas within Student Affairs stay current with and follow all applicable laws, regulations, policies, compliance training and reporting;
  • Conceive strategic funding models for new, pilot, and continuing engagement opportunities. Identify opportunities for future funding development;
  • Engage with faculty, students, and staff about emerging and new opportunities that promote innovative ways to accomplish the vision, goals and strategy.

Career Development and Services

  • Provides strategic leadership that aligns student talent to corporate or sector needs. Responsibilities include applying innovative and progressive practices to deliver an effective and efficient recruiting process, defining a candidate experience that reflects SPS's unique culture, and directly conducting executive recruiting.
  • Ensure effective outreach programs and working relationships, with employers, alumni, faculty, staff, and other placement professionals.
  • Design and lead a new, comprehensive organization structure that provides organized expertise and centralized administrative infrastructure that provides the support necessary to deliver on the vision, goals and strategy of the Career Design Lab.
  • Actualize considerable employer engagement schemas to ensure a deep network of relationships that will advance strong student outcomes.
  • Champion market-advancing dimensions of employer-student engagement to attain measurable and longitudinal outcomes.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

 

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D.

Other Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully create and implement a long-term academic strategy.  A keen intellect, with the ability to conceptualize, anticipate and act on events that may create opportunities or pose challenges; the ability to be an independent thinker and creative problem solver. 
  • Demonstrated success in program or business development with a track record of having rolled out new educational programming or generating growth in business transactions.
  • Strong leadership skills with a capacity to engender loyalty to an organization and cause coupled with a collegial management style and proven team-building skills; ability to hire, develop and retain “A” players.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-departmental teams and task forces in either lead or support roles depending on the project/initiative. 
  • Excellent organizational, writing and communication skills: the ability to persuade and inspire others through verbal and written communications; the ability to be a listener and evaluator with the good judgment to make realistic and clear-cut decisions.
  • Strong project management, writing and editing, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated organization and supervisory experience essential.
  • Sound ethical business judgment and experience or familiarity with the higher education culture as well as the regulatory and economic realities of a not-for-profit university.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit with an ability to thrive in an environment that is characterized by significant growth and change.
  • Commitment to the power of higher education in its ability to transform knowledge and understanding in the service of the greater good.
