Job Summary

Over the past 30 years the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research [CAER] has built up an outstanding research program directed to high-value carbon materials, including polymer-derived fibers and composites. CAER is staffing up its materials program and seeks one or more research engineers at the Assistant, Associate, Senior or Principal levels. The engineer will join a team primarily responsible polymer solution spinning process trials to produce polymer precursor fiber, followed by its conversion to high strength carbon fiber. The engineer will be involved in precursor fiber spinning, oxidation, and carbonization processing. Additionally, the engineer will work closely with the overall team, conducting a variety of fiber characterization techniques including SEM, x-ray scattering, density, thermal and mechanical analyses.
Applicants for the research engineer position will preferably have experience in materials, chemical (or related) engineering, including experience in solution spinning and/or other polymer processing techniques, process control systems, materials characterizations, safety and engineering; strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation and initiative; and the ability to work well with all levels of personnel throughout CAER’s laboratories.
