Job Summary

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environment department of Horticulture seeks a Research Analyst. Candidates should have a broad skillset and interest in addressing questions that span from agriculture to human health. The Research Analyst will work with the PI to meet the goals of on-going (and future) research projects and will be responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day activities in the labs and greenhouses. The selected candidate will be highly encouraged to attend workshops/conferences and contribute to publications and grant applications. The individual will also be encouraged to take an active role in supervising undergraduate and graduate student projects. The selected candidate will be expected to work on projects that range from characterizing plant material, culturing bacteria to performing in vitro digestions and processing human fecal samples. The applicant is not expected to have previous experience or skills in all areas but exhibits a willingness to learn and be involved in various projects. Applicants with experience leading or managing multidisciplinary research projects are encouraged to apply.
In addition to performing research related tasks the Research Analyst will act as the lab manager. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain detailed records and ensure that team members are performing tasks safely and responsibility. The applicant will be required to complete trainings related to general lab safety, working with/disposing of human samples and responsible conduct of research. Fluency with on-line ordering, telephone ordering, and the ability to communicate clearly with sales personnel to obtain items for the lab is required. Overseeing the cleanliness and operational readiness of the equipment and material used for both plant and human-related projects is needed. To ensure a safe working environment for all parties the Research Analyst will develop SOP’s and keep an up to date laboratory safety binder and chemical inventory.

Preferred Education/Experience

The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or PhD in food science, microbiology, nutrition, fermentation science, biochemistry or a related field. A proven track record conducting research in one or more of the following areas is highly desired: plant cell walls, next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, metabolomics or human clinical studies.
