Job Description

As a Principal Package Development Engineer in Tevas West Chester Global Packaging Engineering Group, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of specific packaging strategies including; novel primary container closure selection / development, innovative package technology advancement, design and qualification of barrier system components, selection of material(s) compatible with product requirements, and for providing global packaging technical solutions while partnering with the other internal and external groups and the packaging sites.  This position supports the global packaging development of pharmaceutical and biological products for the Global Packaging Engineering group which is part of the Manufacturing Science & Technology (MS&T) organization.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical advisor for global packaging projects and initiatives
  • Utilization of expertise for packaging system components design and qualification to ensure compliance with applicable international regulations. 
  • Conduct and evaluate complex package concepts and designs
  • Accountable for establishing strong relationships with site packaging leadership; understand and anticipate their packaging needs and identify solutions to support compliant packaging.
  • Deliver packaging solutions & strategies to the regional network to ensure reliable product supply
  • Work with all applicable groups (i.e. - R&D, sites, commercial, etc.) to ensure a robust handshake process to ensure timely & cost effective packaging deliverables
  • Development of new packaging technology & platforms
  • Manage package performance testing and aging studies to be used for sterile and non-sterile product development and qualification
  • Drive and support Teva packaging needs for primary container closure system as well as custom package development projects in support of new product introduction
  • Develop improved test methods, business processes, templates, protocol development, SOPs, standards, etc. to improve overall efficiency and compliance of the packaging engineering organization
  • Manage component qualification of sterile barrier system components in internal and external manufacturing processes
  • Partner with MS&T Regional Heads, Process Engineering, & PS&T leads to ensure alignment with global packaging strategies
  • Serve as the primary packaging liaison in providing packaging related guidance and documentation for the support of new product and primary package introductions.  Establish and improve key processes supporting the selection of primary container closure systems
  • Influence the external regulatory environment to bridge regulations and packaging science in order to minimize regulatory burden and ensure alignment within the Teva packaging network
  • Development and deployment of global packaging standards & drive execution of these harmonized component & process standards

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in packaging engineering, engineering, sciences or related field
  • BS / MS in packaging engineering - preferred
  • 10+ Years in Pharmaceutical Packaging Environment with direct concentration on development of primary packaging componentry of sterile  and non-sterile products, solid oral, sterile, injectables, and devices. 
  • Experience in the creation and review of technical drawings, specifications, testing protocols, documents, and reports
  • Fluent in writing & speaking English
  • Previous experience with establishing new process, procedures or functions within a large pharmaceutical company
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to lead complex technical discussions with other MS&T groups as well as site groups
  • Strong Technical Writing, Problem Solving, and Analytical Skills
  • Ability to work in global multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge in compendia testing (i.e. USP EP, etc.), extractables/leachables, impurities, microbial testing for sterile barrier systems
  • Experience Participating and/or Leading Process Improvement Projects (i.e. Six Sigma)
  • Strong Understanding of Packaging Materials, Technologies, Equipment and Testing
  • Strong Understanding of global / regional pharmaceutical packaging regulations (USP, EP, JP, FDA, EMEA)
  • Strong Understanding of Processes Used in Development of Container Closure systems
  • Experience in areas of packaging support such as anti-counterfeiting technologies, serialization, packaging validation, and cold chain qualification a strong plus
  • Experience integrating environmental regulations in the packaging design process
  • Experience in package validation using ISO, ASTM and ISTA standards for performance testing (shipping study) and to perform aging studies to establish shelf life of pkg  components
  • Knowledge in mechanical testing for primary container closure system materials (for film, foil, laminated foil, etc.)
