Job Summary
The University of Kentucky seeks a postdoctoral scholar for a position that is funded by a federal grant that is reviewed annually, which encourages the publication of scientific findings discovered through research. The position requires a broad-based knowledge of microbiology and microbiome statistical data processing. This broad knowledge base is required to analyze the microbial population of reference tobacco products and other agricultural crops, provide support to our on-going proficiency testing program and planned research initiatives on reference tobacco products. This opportunity allows the right person to expand their technical skill set and participate on a dynamic team in a growing organization. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to perform the following functions;
• Coordinate with statisticians to assist in the statistical processing, analysis and verification of proficiency testing/inter-laboratory study data
• Conduct analysis as defined by existing methodologies and practices on reference tobacco products
• Assist in the development of new microbiology or analytical chemistry methods for analysis of tobacco and nicotine products
• Confer with scientists and collaborators regarding analysis and research results
• Prepare technical reports, assist in drafting manuscripts and prepare presentations to promote learning and academic publication

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Successful candidates will typically have the following skill set:
• Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, or similar field of study required. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply.
• Proficiency in the operation of statistical operations in Microsoft Excel required. Experience in statistical processing of large data sets by Microsoft Excel, R, or SAS statistical software is strongly preferred
• Conceptual knowledge in a broad range of microbiology and environmental DNA analysis with hands-on experience with microbial isolation and identification of pure strains or complex mixtures via graduate research, academic or industry experience is preferred.
• OR, analytical chemistry experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry, especially MALDI-MS or GC-MS, via graduate research, academic or industry experience is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills proven by a good number of peer reviewed publications
• A team player with high degree of initiative, flexibility and self-motivation
• Capable of working independently in a lab setting, one-on-one with supervisor, and as part of a larger collaborative team.
