Job Summary

Post-Doctoral Research Scholars in Intestinal Physiology and Carcinogenesis
Markey Cancer Center, University of Kentucky

Overview: The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center (MCC) is proud to be Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center located in beautiful Lexington, Kentucky. The University of Kentucky is one of only a few universities in the country to have its undergraduate, medical and graduate colleges (16 total) and a nationally-recognized medical center and hospital on one central campus which allows for unique multidisciplinary collaborations. The MCC, consistently ranked in the top 50 cancer centers in the country by US News and World Report, is dedicated to driving a measurable reduction in cancer incidence and mortality in Kentucky through a comprehensive program of cancer research, prevention, community outreach, education and patient care.

We are currently recruiting two outstanding and ambitious postdoctoral research scholars to work within a team of talented multidisciplinary investigators on projects focused on: 1) the physiologic and pathophysiologic effects of the intestinal hormone neurotensin on obesity, fat metabolism, and mechanisms of obesity-associated cancers, and 2) the novel role of lipid metabolism and, in particular, the effects of fatty acid synthase as a driver for colorectal cancer growth, progression and metastasis.

Key Responsibilities Include:

The newly hired Scholars will work under the direction of the Principal Investigators and other senior laboratory personnel. Scholars will lead their projects and also have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with the rich community of basic and translational scientists at the MCC. In addition, Scholars will be expected to write and submit manuscripts based on their findings and assist with grant applications. They will be involved in the following techniques and duties:
• The project on the intestinal hormone neurotensin (NT) will extend novel findings published in Nature (Li, J et al. An obligatory role for neurotensin in high fat diet-induced obesity. Nature 533:411-415, 2016) identifying NT as an important contributor to obesity associated with consumption of a high fat diet. In addition, elevation of pro-NT levels serves as a marker for future obesity. The Fellow will utilize multiple genetic mouse models, mouse and human intestinal organoid cultures, patient samples, Drosophila models, and other in vivo and in vitro model systems to identify the molecular mechanisms for fat deposition and fat metabolism associated with the increased release of NT. The project will further explore the biologic and clinical implications of NT on fat inflammation and as a potentially important link to obesity-associated cancers.
• The project studying the effects of tumor metabolism and fatty acid synthase (FASN) on colon cancer growth, progression and metastasis represents an innovative study that has identified that inhibition of FASN can result in decrease growth and metastasis of a variety of cancers, including colorectal cancers. This is also the focus of an ongoing phase I/II clinical trial at the MCC testing the effect of FASN inhibition on the growth and metabolism of colon and head and neck cancers. The Fellow will utilize a number of model systems that are well-established in the laboratory and molecular techniques to test the effects of FASN inhibition, in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents including immunotherapies, on the inhibition of tumor progression and metastasis.

Other highlights of the program include:
• In addition to the research, the position will have a focus on career development including grant writing, scientific writing/presentation, mentorship of graduate students and technicians, networking, and building collaborations.

Qualifications, experience and skills required for consideration:

• A PhD degree in life or biomedical sciences, or a related discipline is required;
• Ability to drive an individual project with scientific rigor, but also be highly collaborative with other academic partners;
• Candidates should be highly self-motivated and organized, have a strong work ethic and desire to learn, and a proven track record of productivity;
• Previous experience with mouse models, cancer biology, and cellular and molecular biology is highly desired.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

This position requires a person with a PhD degree with previous experience in biomedical research. He/she will be studying the effect of FASN inhibitors in colon cancer. Experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and mouse models is preferred.
