Job Function:

This position is 20 hours per week. The Math Specialist will assess student skill levels, design individual programs of study, assist students through the remedial and college level math classes, evaluate the progress and facilitate the student’s ongoing progress through their requirements. In addition, will provide group and supplemental instruction in specific need areas such as My Math Lab curriculum, usage of graphing calculators, and special topic discussion (linear equations, exponents, square roots, algebraic formulas, word problems, etc.)


Rate of Pay: $15.52

Essential Job Functions:


1. Design individualized programs to assist students in basic skill development.
2. Provide SOAR students with subject matter tutoring in Pre-Algebra through Trigonometry.
3. Design, monitor, and coordinate the tutoring procedures and develop a tracking system.
4. Assist SOAR students in developing additional learning skills in study skill techniques, problem-solving strategies, time management, etc.
5. Evaluate the student’s progress and provide needed intervention and feedback.
6. Complete in a timely fashion required time & effort reports, timesheets, and other recordkeeping forms.
7. Design and teach academic related workshops and supplemental instruction sessions each semester.
8. Network with college instructors in order to recruit new students and to develop a flow of communication to keep up with the latest requirements and techniques.
9. Maintain a working knowledge and expertise of the My Math Lab, and other computer software systems that are utilized in math classes.
10. Serve on college and professional committees as requested by Director.
11. Assigned extensive multiple work assignments.
12. Completes all mandatory training and participated in a minimum of two professional development each year.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mathematic

Work Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience teaching math
  • Must have experience with and understanding of diagnostic instruments and their interpretation.

Certifications &/or Licenses:

  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License


  • Ability to handle multiple task and prioritize effectively.

  • Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads and public/student contact.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office equipment (copier, scanner, fax machine, and any equipment within the SOAR lab), Microsoft Office software, (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and social media, Student Access, SharePoint, Banner, etc.
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Exhibit problem solving skills beyond a set of instructions and adapt to changes when necessary.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of tutoring techniques and strategies.
  • Working knowledge from Pre-Algebra through Trigonometry
    Ability to coordinate tutoring sessions
  • Ability to enter computer contact reports on each student session
    Ability to gather data, analyze it, and generate grade and attendance reports for retention demonstration.
  • Understanding of study skill strategies, including note-taking, time management, test-taking tips, textbook reading instruction, memory techniques, etc.
  • Understanding of cultural diversity and the disadvantaged populations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Coaching strategies for “Best Practices” in student retention.
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Evidences a history of demonstrating ethical and professional behavior.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Mathematics

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include some evenings and weekends in an often times busy and noisy environment.
  • Work will be performed in an office and classroom environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone and via email. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, standing, talking, listening and computer usage.
