Gallery attendants are trained by and report to the Visitor Services Manager. Additional training by other Museum staff as needed.

Required Related Experience

Gallery attendants receive hands-on experience with many aspects of museum practices. They will have opportunities to meet visiting artists and lecturers, assist during events, and have access to various university/community leaders. This position can help clarify and lead to future jobs, residencies, grants, etc.

Job Summary

Attendants are the first individuals that visitors encounter upon entry, so making people feel welcome and providing information are very important. Key duties include: capturing attendance and demographic information, answering phone calls, providing oversight/security to protect art on view, answering questions (or referring questions to appropriate staff member), providing information regarding exhibitions, programs, events, membership, and the museum in general, event set up and tear down, assisting full-time staff as needed, and promotional material distribution.

Gallery attendants must be prompt, professional, reliable, good listeners, friendly, and have excellent communication skills. The position requires a willingness to learn visual literacy and interpretation skills; how to do curatorial research and condition reporting and installation/uninstalling procedures. To be active on the UK campus and Lexington community is a definite plus.

Preferred Education/Experience

Fine Arts major/minor preferred, but not required.

A student in pursuit of a degree in art, art history, arts administration, or similar field of study is preferred, but not required.
