Job Description

 

Reporting to the Vice President Tax for North America, the Director, Tax Research, Planning & Controversy is responsible for:

initiating and implementing tax planning projects, monitoring industry issues, analyzing legislative proposals and oversight of the Companys Federal and State audit processes.
 
These responsibilities will be carried out with a focus on maximizing corporate income tax savings opportunities and contributing to stakeholder value while ensuring compliance with the tax payment and reporting obligations of the Company.  The incumbent will interact regularly and routinely with all other functions within the tax department as well as with the commercial, business and other operations of the Company.
 
Responsibilities:
The incumbent will partner with the business and commercial functions in proactively identifying and researching efficient tax planning strategies and opportunities.  They will implement structural and non-structural tax planning strategies to maximize tax savings on a defensible basis.  Working with others both inside and outside of the tax department including external advisors, the individual will have responsibility for the development and implementation of sophisticated tax planning strategies which are aligned with global tax objectives.  This work will include the management of and participation in reviews of ongoing business activities and proposed transactions, properly advising management of tax consequences and opportunities with an emphasis on tax efficiency and compliance with legal requirements.  Furthermore, the role includes responsibility to research tax issues that are assigned or arise in the support of the business and to provide tax advice and recommendations as appropriate. 
 
With support from other members of the tax department, the Director, Tax Research, Planning & Controversy will oversee and manage all Federal and State audits.  As the Companys primary point of contact for revenue authorities, the incumbent will strategize and conceive all tax correspondence and communications with taxing authorities.  Tax controversy management and oversight responsibilities extend from the field examination level through to the final disposition of matters, potentially including appellate procedures and litigation where appropriate.  In this respect, the incumbent will consult with the VP Tax, North America and make appropriate recommendations.
 
Working closely with the Tax Operations staff, the incumbent will assist in identifying, researching and evaluating alternative tax positions in order to determine supportable and cost effective filing positions.  This work will be conducted at the State, Federal and International levels of US Corporate Income Tax.
 

The incumbent will support the tax department in its work, including assisting in obtaining necessary information and drafting documentations for use with tax returns (including the documentation of Uncertain Tax Positions) and tax planning

Qualifications

 

BA and JD required; LL.M (Taxation) preferred.

Minimum of 8 years of experience in US corporate income taxation.

Big 4, law firm and/or large corporate experience.

Familiar with tax technology and middleware solutions.
