The Business Process Specialist I is responsible for a range of activities related to Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives. This position works closely with the Sr. Manager, Business Process Management and business stakeholders to analyze business processes spanning all aspects of our business operations.

The Business Process Specialist I will participate in the planning and facilitation of BPM workshops and Operational Assessments and is responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining BPM artifacts including “As Is” and “To Be” diagrams and narratives, business requirements, RACI matrices, process risks and assumptions, decisions, workshop notes, etc.

In this role, the Business Process Specialist I will collaborate with team members spanning multiple disciplines to provide input and education on aspects of BPM and how they may impact / influence approaches to Business Analysis, Change Management, Training and Project Management.

Essential Functions

Business Process Methodology – Knowledge of the principles, framework, methods, approach and tools used in the analysis, improvement and optimization of business processes.

  • Apply principles of Business Process Management to create and maintain process artifacts and deliverables
  • Educate team members on the ERP program’s Business Process Management methodology and governance framework
  • Contribute to and support business process re-engineering and leading practice definition efforts
  • Perform best-practice research and recommend the utilization of industry best practices as appropriate
  • Stay up to date with knowledge on industry standards and process improvement methodologies

Business Process Modeling, Analysis & Design – Ability to identify a desired future state that addresses a business process improvement or business problem

  • Aide in the facilitation of business process modeling workshops
  • Effectively use interviewing skills to elicit current and future state business requirements and processes
  • Understand and document complex business problems, business/functional user requirements
  • Actively participate in “As Is” process discovery and analysis
  • Participate in “To Be” modeling activities, contributing to standardized/common to-be processes considering industry best practices
  • Create and maintain BPM artifacts including Visio business process diagrams and narratives
  • Document business process "pain points" or disconnections and translate them into process improvement opportunities, such as cost savings/avoidance, productivity gains, quality improvements or revenue generation.
  • Socialize and obtain approvals for “To Be” Business Process documentation (e.g., process diagrams and narratives, business requirements, RACI matrices, process risks and assumptions, decisions, workshop notes, etc.)

Business Process Operational Assessments – Ability to evaluate current state business processes, compare to BPM standards and identify business needs and functional gaps

  • Co-facilitate Operational Assessments including “As Is” process analysis, comparison to “To Be” processes, and identification of gap/fit
  • Ensure BPM process alignment, escalating situations where either “As Is” or “To Be” business processes do not align
  • Document the findings and outcomes of Operational Assessments
  • Plan and schedule all aspects of the Operational Assessments, coordinating with Reliance Business and ERP team members 

Business Relationship Management - Ability to engage business sponsors and contribute to their targeted business outcomes.

  • Manage timely flow of information
  • Clearly articulate the role of Business Process Modeling (BPM) in terms easily understood by business constituents
  • Ability to reach out across the organization and communicate with people at different levels, with diverse needs and agendas; related capabilities include facilitation and teaming skills.

Supplemental Duties & Responsibilities

  • Pursues training and development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills
  • Educate others on BPM approaches and standard processes
  • Other duties as requested


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in a related field required
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization in a professional, diplomatic and tactful manner
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills; must have the ability to convey complex information to a broad audience
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • A team player with integrity, passion, initiative and leadership ability
  • 3+ years’ business experience in the Metals Service Center Industry required
  • 3+ years’ experience with Business Process Modeling required
  • Basic knowledge of Metals Service Center Process Model preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to quickly learn business processes
  • Highly organized, multi-tasking capabilities, and commitment to detail required
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio) and Process Mapping tools required
